What Do I Need to Start Yoga at home?

With so many closures and capacity limits of gyms and yoga studios worldwide, you probably have committed to starting a home yoga practice. But have you wondered what you need or where to get the stuff? Have you thought to yourself “what do I even need to start doing yoga?” Well, the good news is that you don’t need a ton!

Here are my top three recommendations and the best part is that you can order/pre-order them from us!

  1. Yoga mat. You can absolutely start with just your wood floor, carpet, or grass, but having a great mat tells your mind “let’s do this!” while also reducing pressure on your knees and wrists. Mats help you grip the ground which is super important when doing poses such as downward-facing dog and plank. When you slip, if even just a little, it can pull the joints past their range and cause mild injury. A good mat helps your hands and feet stay put. You can get an awesome mat here!

  2. Props. While I love using as many props as possible, many people like to use just blocks and straps. I recommend having a chair nearby, having a few blocks, blankets, and a strap. However, don’t feel like you need to purchase one right away. Stacks of books work fine as do canvas belts and sturdy scarves. Set up your area with these aides without shame. We don’t play the “no pain, no gain” round these parts! These can help you with balance poses, deep stretches, and yoga nidra.

  3. A guide. It can be hard to get out of our own head. Even as a yoga teacher and studio owner, I like to take classes from other people. Yes, I practice on my own throughout the day (mostly meditation and small movement), but for full-length asana classes, I really appreciate having someone lead me so I can just listen to their voice and watch them if need be. It is a nice break.
