Best Books about Space for Preschoolers
Have a curious kiddo who wants to know how the stars got there or why our Earth spins? It’s never too early to start talking about space. Preschoolers are naturally curious and want to know why the moon is there sometimes and not others, why we have night and day, and how far the sun is. This list of books are some of my favorite for bedtime reading, afternoon story time, and to even create entire unit studies with.
Best books about space for preschoolers
I love Gail Gibbons so much! Her books are both entertaining and informative and really have a great range. They are easy enough to understand for younger kids such as preschoolers but have enough detail to be valuable to older kids. The Reasons for Seasons does a fantastic job explaining axial tilt, Earth’s rotation, and seasonal changes while The Moon Book answers all of your questions about our moon including how it helps us!
2. Dreaming of Space is a brand-new book with beautiful illustrations and real photos from NASA. It is told as a poem to keep kids’ interest through the melodic patterns but covers geography, astronomy such as Black Holes, and more. Even my older kids are impressed with this one!
3. Is your kiddo asking why the Earth spins or why they have to go to bed when it’s dark? While this book, What Makes Day and Night, doesn’t answer the biological questions of why humans are diurnal, it does explain why we have day and night, how the Earth rotates on an axis, and includes a simple experiment so that your kiddo can see the concepts and understand them better.
4. I adore the “I Am” series by Rebecca and James McDonald for their lively personification of the planets and sun that really helps younger kids identify with them as characters. In addition, their use of color always makes me happy. I especially love the added environmental lessons in “I Am Earth”. Blending all disciplines of science is crucial to seeing how we live and interact with our world has a huge impact.
5. Luna Muna is the perfect combination of a fictional book with a main character and accurate information that enthralls younger learners and preschoolers. Luna takes kids into outer space to her favorite haunts as an adventurous astronaut. She’ll inspire your kiddo to ask questions and seek answers with her sparkly personality and insatiable curiosity.
6. I know, I know! Stickers and Play-Doh might be our worst enemies as parents but my kids absolutely LOVE this space sticker book and I can’t blame them. There’s so much to learn and do. It covers planets, the sun, the solar system, comets, and even has logic puzzles and things to do. We often use it on our trips to Disney or other road trips for fight-free car rides. It’s the best $7 spent, in my opinion.
